The Subaru Outback has been delivering capable and comfortable all-weather and all-road capabilities to adventure-loving Americans for over three decades. The Outback is based on the Subaru Legacy sedan but outsells in the US market. The 2024 Outback carries over from the 2023 model unchanged except for the Wilderness trim which receives a minor update to its grille and front bumper.

The turbocharged engine offers better top-end power for cruising, merging and overtaking. Both engines are mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission, which improves efficiency but can feel unnatural compared to a standard automatic.

The Outback prioritizes ride comfort over sportiness. The suspension is well-tuned for bumps in the road, but there’s not much feel or feedback from the steering. It’s easy to turn at low speeds and is well-suited to loose off-road surfaces.

All models come with four-wheel drive and an X-Mode feature that provides extra traction in slippery conditions. The Onyx XT and Wilderness models get additional X-Mode settings for snow/dirt and deep snow/mud.

According to Consumer Reports, the 2024 Subaru Outback will have average reliability compared to other new cars based on data from 2022, 2023, and 2024 models. JD Power rated the 2024 Outback 82 out of 100 in reliability and quality.

2024 Subaru Outback Maintenance Schedule

Subaru recommends servicing the Outback every 6,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. At this interval, the tires should be rotated, the engine oil should be changed, and the oil filter should be replaced.

At 12,000 miles, technicians should change the engine oil, replace the engine oil filter, replace the HVAC A/C filter, rotate the tires, check the clutch operation, inspect the brake lines, check the operation of the parking and service brake systems, inspect the disc brake pad and disc, front and rear axle boots and joints, and inspect the steering and suspension.
